Help Please!!!!

Post by Duskie on Thu Jan 15, 2009 8:51 pm

I just love my camera class!! Last week we had to play around with out cameras. We are never allowed to use the flash. He says he'll notice? Anyway... We were to use different angles, different setting, that sort of thing. We had to find 2 outside objects and take 36 pictures of it. (it's sucked!! It was so cold!!) Any way.. We picked our favorite of each to show to the class. (The rest got downloaded to the teacher)
Here's my 2

So.. now to my help...
I understand what ISO is and how it works and what setting to use when. What are F stops/aperture? Isn't that the same thing as ISO? I'm confused!

no!
size of the shutter opening is called the aperture size, the length of time the shutter is open is called shutter speed.
Aperture sizes are measured in what is called f stops. The smaller the f stop the larger the opening. Lenses with smaller f stops (ability to open larger) are called faster lenses because they allow the shutter to be open for a much shorter period of time to get a proper exposure.
a smaller f stop (larger opening) is used when shooting in low light situations so that the shutter speed can be faster and still allow enough light in to expose the photo.

ISO. This is a value that represents film or a digital sensors sensitivity to light. ISO is measured as 100, 200, 400... 1600, 3200. As ISO is increased two things happen. First, a given aperture the shutter time to expose a picture decreases (great for low light situations). Second, the picture can develop noise, a - attribute that looks grainy This usually takes place after ISO 400 and to a different extent based upon the particular camera
Oh it will take to long to explain it all, tell u what

okay, new question...

My camera doesn't have the f-stops and the lens. (but I still have to learn it)

So... if you are using the f-stops, do you still need to use ISO?

We had to turn off the auto settings for everything plus we are not allowed to use flash. With no flash, you learn ISO quickly!!!

okay, so .. say you want to take a picture, outside of the lets say... 8 inches of snow, of a snowman... on a bright day without flash. Would you use a 100 ISO and like a 64 f-stop?

Just trying to see if I understand this right.

That site was great Rose!! The ones I was on yesterday just confused the heck out of me!

I guess the reason this has me all confused is because I can't play around with it.

My camera doesn't have em on the lens. I do have differnet setting though like landscape, night portrait, snow, beach, text firework, flower... and some more... are these pre-programmed f-stops?

I have digi, and yes, they are preset. That is not doing me much good.

I was looking at new cameras today.. geez they get pricey!! You'd think the point and shot would be move expensive since the camerea does all the work!! lol...
