Shingles, Anyone Had Them?

Ok so on Friday, 45 minutes before Dad was supposed to pick my daughter Taylor she shows me this horrific rash on her back and breast area! Large red welts with blisters overtop of other blisters, and it looked painful! I had to rush her in to the clinic, (but I was scraed not to have her back in time for her dad, long story) and she has Shingles, the Chicken Pox virus. It is Shingles this time as she had chicken pox when she was 2 1/2. But mostly older people get them, but my daughter is really stressed out right now. How horrible!

my middle son's best friend (lives in the neighborhood) had them recently. i had to educate myself as i wasn't sure how they spread. well, none of my kiddos have had chickenpox so needless to say they weren't allowed to play for a few days. i did see his "welts" of blisters and could tell he was in a bit of pain with them.

i do know that the eldery shouldn't be around anyone with them. i hope your daughter gets through this quick and with little discomfort.

Oh dear, im not really sure about shingles in children, i know my boss had it once, but she was an old lady.
All i know it that its alot more sevaer then chicken pox.

Just heard recently how often children are getting shingles now.....strange, the older folks only get them if they didn't have chicken pox as a kid....but the kid version is if you did already have chicken pox...so strange!

I heard it can make the child infertile, for when they are older????

Really????? Now i need to look into that!!!!! I want to be a gramma! not now but one day!

Jennifer, I'm no expert. But I do know, that shingles can affect anyone. TYPICALLY it's older folks. But, to attempt an analogy (and hopefully not freak anyone out), it's a bit like flu. Certain groups are more at risk (elderly, the very young, stressed or immunosupressed), but anyone can become sick with it. I would follow the Dr orders. And try to figure out if she's stressed, or immunosuppressed, and then work on that. Hopefully she won't have a relapse. Hope that helps, and hope she's better soon!

My BIL (who's 23) got one large shingle right in the middle of his forehead. It was extremely painful for him. Shingles have started to become more common among individuals of all ages. It's a virus very similar to Chicken Pox in that if you don't treat the sores right, you can have some bad scarring - like me from the Chicken Pox.

Update: Well I got tylor back from dad's house last night and she was in more pain than ever, (he did not take her to the dr?) and I needed to do something. I took her back the cliniic and we got a stronger antiviral and some tylenol with codiene and she was put on 400 mg of Ibuprofen every 4 hours. it finally knocked her out last night. I also got some new herbal stuff especially for shingles. I am not usually into herbal but I was willing to try anything. well, it all started working and she got a good sleep last night and is moiving around a bit today. Still no school for a couple of hours.

Taylor is totally stressed as I have taken her dad back to court to change the court order, her dad called child protection on me again (like he does everytime I take him to court) and her dad and his g/f always fight. She apparently is reacting to the stress severly this time!

Poor thing....reassure her none of this is her fault at all and hopefully she will chill out a bit!

Jennifer, i can relate as my two older children are with my previous husband {ill face here}. i have done so good with not involving them (it's been over 6 years) but lately he's been giving me trouble with support, etc. and the kiddos have gotten wind of more than their share. uuuggghh anyway, didn't mean to steal your thread just wanted you to know i can relate and if you want to vent...i'm here.

also, should she be stressing with those shingles? poor thing, that can't be good. i hope she is well soon. i thought the initial pain/blisters only lasted a few days???? {hugs to her and you}

Day 6 of shingles! Wow she is in more pain but the rash is finally starting to fade and they are crusting now....I know grosse. So she spends alot of time all doped up and doing stupid stuff!

Oh the poor thing Jennifer. How awful that she has the painful shingles and that you both have to deal with the "dad" stress.

How awful! Hope she recovers soon - & that the stress disappears, moves to another state or whatever it takes for you to live in peace
